Bribery Charges Against Doctor

Officers of the Central Anti-Corruption Bureau detained a surgeon from the M. Kopernik Hospital in Łódź. The doctor allegedly accepted financial benefits in exchange for performing reimbursed surgeries. The investigation is supervised by the District Prosecutor's Office in Łódź.

On June 26, 2025, officers from the Regional Office of the CBA in Łódź detained Jacek C., a specialist surgeon, on suspicion of accepting financial benefits from patients. CBA officers secured documentation and electronic equipment. Cash and a passenger vehicle were also seized.

Criminal Scheme

Officers of the Regional Office of the CBA in Łódź are conducting an investigation into into the acceptance of financial benefits by a specialist in surgery at the Provincial Multi-Specialist Center for Oncology and Traumatology named after M. Copernicus in Łódź. The investigation findings indicate that in connection with performing managerial functions, the doctor was to accept financial benefits in the amount of PLN 2,000 to PLN 20,000 in exchange for accelerating the performance of procedures, including bariatric procedures, which were reimbursed from the National Health Fund. After the operation financed from public funds, the patient reported to the surgeon for a private visit and handed over the financial benefit. The findings indicate that the criminal procedure lasted at least from January 2022 to the present.

Preventive Measures Taken

The detained individual was brought to the District Prosecutor’s Office in Łódź, where he was charged under Article 228 of the Polish Penal Code.

The prosecutor imposed non-custodial preventive measures, including a bail of PLN 200,000, a ban on contacting specific individuals, and a travel ban accompanied by the seizure of his passport.

CBA Appeals to the Public

CBA reminds the public that under Article 229 §6 of the Penal Code, a person who offers a financial or personal benefit—or a promise thereof—and the benefit or promise is accepted, shall not be subject to punishment if they report the offense to the appropriate authorities and disclose all significant circumstances before the authorities learn of the crime.
