Former Vice-Rector Detained
Officers of the Central Anti-Corruption Bureau, in cooperation with Border Guard officers, detained a Ukrainian citizen attempting to enter the territory of the Republic of Poland. The detained man is a former vice-rector of the university formerly known as Collegium Humanum, who is alleged to have been involved in organizing an illegal scheme involving the issuance of documents falsely confirming the course of academic studies.
Taras G. was detained on May 3, 2025, at the Medyka border crossing, on the orders of a prosecutor from the Silesian Branch of the Department for Organized Crime and Corruption of the National Prosecutor’s Office in Katowice. His detention is part of a multi-threaded investigation into irregularities in the activities of Collegium Humanum.
The man was brought to the headquarters of the Silesian Branch in Katowice, where the prosecutor presented him with charges of committing five offenses under Article 258 § 1 of the Penal Code, and Articles 228 § 3 and 5, 271 § 3 in conjunction with Article 11 § 2, Article 12 § 1, Article 65 § 1, and Article 21 § 2 of the Penal Code.
Taras G. is suspected of participating in an organized criminal group engaged in issuing false documents in the form of academic transcripts and diplomas from Collegium Humanum.
Fictitious Academic Records
According to findings by CBA officers, Taras G., while cooperating with other individuals representing the university and holding the position of vice-rector at Collegium Humanum, organized an illegal scheme as a so-called recruiter. This scheme involved issuing documents falsely confirming the course of academic studies for Ukrainian citizens.
As part of this criminal operation, pre-prepared certificates confirming enrollment at Collegium Humanum were generated. With the involvement of Taras G., false certificates were issued and handed over to interested Ukrainian individuals. Preliminary findings indicate that at least 2,405 fraudulent documents were issued in this manner.
Financial Gain
In exchange for the fictitious certificates, Taras G. facilitated payments totaling over €850,000 to Collegium Humanum. Together with other university authorities, he committed the offense of accepting financial benefits. It has been determined that Taras G. received a commission of €80 for each fraudulent certificate he arranged.
Temporary Custody
The suspect has provided a statement. The prosecutor submitted a motion to the District Court Katowice – East in Katowice to impose a preventive measure in the form of temporary arrest, citing the severity of the potential sentence, risk of tampering with evidence, lack of a permanent residence in Poland, and the risk of flight.
The court fully accepted the prosecutor’s motion and imposed a three-month temporary arrest on Taras G.
